  • On August 16, Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd (“Edra”), subsidiary of CGN Energy International Holdings Co., Limited (“CGNEI”) visited vulnerable communities and five HDB houses in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor affected by the epidemic, and carried out “food and necessities distribution activities". This is the fourth event since the launch of the event on August 8. So far, it has assisted 520 disadvantaged families, including families in poverty, single mothers, and small traders.

Because of coronavirus, some disadvantaged groups in Malaysia are struggling to make ends meet. Many families who depend on daily wages are facing salary cut or even being laid off, and their source of income has been cut off.

To help them get out of their predicament, the Malaysian government has launched a series of assistance programs. Edra has always been actively fulfilling its social responsibilities, and has responded to and tried its best to participate in this action. It has joined forces with a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged women in the local area—Women of Will, to provide assistance to affected communities and families, reach out to help them reduce their financial burden and return to normal life.

Items distributed through this event include rice, oil, milk powder, canned sardines, sugar, green onions, garlic, washing powder, soap and other food and basic daily necessities, which can be used by the recipient families for two to three months. Datuk Mohamad Nor, Chief Investment Officer of Edra, said: “As schools resume, household expenditure goes up, this (aid) will provide a certain degree of help to families whose source of income has been affected. We will stand together and overcome this difficult time.”

After hearing that Edra is a Chinese-funded enterprise, many beneficiaries said "thank you" to the staff in Chinese. Selvarani Suramaniam, one of the beneficiaries, said: “Because of the pandemic, we are forced to stay at home. My husband doesn’t have a job, my children are unable to go to school, and I cannot do businesses. With these aids, our family’s life in the next two to three months will be secured”.

Siti Aida, another beneficiary, said: "My husband has just returned to work, and at the same time I’m trying to do businesses online to help out with the family. These aids will definitely save us some money.”

During the event, Edra has sincerely followed the principle of "safety first", comprehensively implemented prevention and control measures, and strictly abided by the standard operating procedures prescribed by the Malaysian government. All volunteers and beneficiaries have worn masks and maintained social distancing. People were instructed to measure temperature and use hand sanitizer at the check-in areas first before collecting aids.

On the evening of August 16, Buletin Utama TV3, Malaysia's evening news channel reported the food and necessities distribution activities of Edra during prime time.

Edra is the second largest independent power producer in Malaysia. It has 10 projects in operation and 1 project under construction in countries along the Belt and Road such as Malaysia, Egypt, and Bangladesh. All along, Edra has been actively incorporating itself into the culture of countries where our projects are located, participating in and supporting the development of local education, sports, and medical care, and assisting disadvantaged groups to fully fulfill its corporate responsibility.
