  • On December 18, local time in Laos, with the pouring of the first concrete at the construction site, CGN officially commenced the construction of Phase I of the 1-million-kilowatt PV project in the Northern Laos Interconnected Clean Energy Base. This project marks Laos' first large-scale PV initiative. CGN will collaborate with over 70 Chinese and Laotian enterprises to jointly develop the project, striving to establish a benchmark for power cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong region.

As a foundational industry, the power sector is a crucial area in building the China-Laos community with a shared future. In October 2023, China and Laos renewed and implemented a new five-year action plan to deepen their shared future, proposing to "strengthen the strategic partnership in power cooperation and accelerate the advancement of power interconnection."

The CGN Northern Laos Interconnected Clean Energy Base project serves as a key supporting power source for the China-Laos power interconnection initiative. Located in the northern Lao provinces of Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, and Phongsaly, the project is designed to create a large-scale clean energy base integrating wind, solar, biomass, and other complementary energy sources. Through an innovative interconnected model, it will help Laos transform its natural advantages into economic benefits, expand the scale of mutual power support between China and Laos, and achieve resource sharing, market complementarity, and industrial synergy between the two countries.

As Laos' first large-scale clean energy power project, it is expected to generate approximately 1.7 billion kWh of electricity annually upon completion, meeting the yearly electricity demand of around 10 million households. The environmental benefits of this clean energy initiative equate to saving about 510,000 tons of standard coal annually while reducing emissions by 270 tons of sulfur dioxide, 302 tons of nitrogen oxides, and 1.4 million tons of carbon dioxide. The clean electricity produced will be transmitted to Yunnan via the China-Laos 500 kV interconnection project, supporting Yunnan's energy transition and ensuring a stable power supply.
